[Update] "Whip It" to be directed by Drew Barrymore

December 11, 2007 - 2:21am

Production Charts and the Hutchinson Leader (MN) note that the upcoming roller derby film Whip It will be directed by Hollywood star Drew Barrymore. Whip It's screenwriter, L.A. Derby Doll Maggie Mayhem (aka Shauna Cross), is also the author of Derby Girl. The Leader article states that it's unclear if the movie is an adaptation of the book or just something similar. This will apparently be the first time directing for Barrymore. That's cool, but who will play K.C. Carr? Note to Barrymore: if it's set in the mid-west, go flat track for extra derby cred. And shoot the big climax bout scene at the Roy Wilkins.

Summary (from the article): "A Midwestern, small-town, teenage girl discovers the high-energy world of roller derby and must decide if she’s willing to go against her parents and friends in order to pursue the sport she loves."

Update: Ms. Mayhem emailed in to clarify things. She writes, "...it is an adaptation of my book, Derby Girl, and takes place in and around austin, tx. not the midwest. not that the midwest isn't cool." So much for the Roy. Ah, they'll probably shoot it in Vancouver anyway!

The Tough Cookies earned a few more merit badges while the Sirens had their case thrown out of court, as the Girls in Green took down the Women in Blue, 32-26.

Pounding the Sirens relentlessly for the first 6 jams, the Cookies tasered the Black and Blue with an immediate and commanding 10 point lead, the Sirens calling in a 2-12 score to the station house. The battle was a bloody one, with members from both teams in penalty box jail for most of the jams.

TXRD defeats LADD 39 - 27

January 29, 2007 - 1:01pm

In a much anticipated banked-track bout this weekend, the Los Angeles Derby Dolls fell to the Lonestar Rollergirls at their home track, The Dollhouse, in L.A. A bout recap can be found here. "The game started out on fairly even ground in the early jams, TXRD and LADD traded off points, starting with Sister Mary Jane's 2 points against LADD. In the beginning of the 5th jam, both teams were tied up 3-3. But that was also Smarty Pant's first jam, and she tore through the pack with little effective opposition taking the Lonestars to a 3 point lead. This was a pattern that would be repeated throughout the game."
